Do I need to install a border or edging to keep Pea Gravel in place?

Because Pea Gravel is naturally rounded, the individual stones “roll” easily under pressure and can migrate into your lawn or flower beds. To maintain a clean look and keep the material contained, we highly recommend installing a sturdy border, such as metal edging, cedar timbers, or natural stone, particularly in high-traffic walkways.

For residential paths, we typically recommend a depth of 2 to 3 inches to provide full coverage without making the surface difficult to navigate. If the layer is spread too deep, your feet may “sink” into the material, making it difficult to maintain a steady stride, whereas a 2-inch layer offers the perfect balance of stability and aesthetics.

We generally do not recommend Pea Gravel as a sub-base for pavers, flagstone patios, or driveways because rounded stones do not compact into a rigid foundation. For projects requiring structural stability and load-bearing capacity, a material like Crushed Limestone or Road Base is a much more effective choice to prevent settling and shifting over time.

Our Pea Gravel is a natural “multi-blend” aggregate that typically features a varied mix of tan, buff, white, and gray earth tones. This natural color variety allows the stone to blend seamlessly into the native Texas and Oklahoma landscape, complementing both modern architectural designs and more traditional, rustic environments.
